Mapleton, Iowa—Walter H. “Bud” Rohde, 94, of Mapleton died Monday, January 31, 2000, at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Mapleton, with the Rev. Scott Fiege officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Sioux City. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton.

Mr. Rohde was born July 22, 1905, in Mapleton, the son of Claus and Maggie (Ragis) Rohde. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith.

He had lived in the Mapleton area his entire life, except for one and a half years when he lived in Sioux City and Storm Lake, Iowa.

He married Alma Hesse on October 31, 1932, in Mapleton.

He was employed at the Golden Rule Store for six years, then did livestock trucking from 1945 to 1946. In 1946, he bought McVicker Produce renaming it Bud’s Produce, which the couple operated until 1964. He then worked in trucking, hauling gravel, until retiring in 1978.

He wife died July 16, 1981.

He was a member of St Matthew Lutheran Church.

Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Phyllis and Dale Rotnicke of Mapleton; a son and his wife, Leonard and Jane of Sheldon, Iowa, 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren and a great-great grandson.

He was preceded in death by a son, Richard; a daughter-in-law, Betty Rohde: three sisters and three brothers.

Walter “Bud” Rohde, age 94, of Mapleton, Iowa, died Monday, January 31, 2000 at Mapleton, Iowa.

Services were held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, February 3 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Mapleton with Pastor Scott Fiege officiating. Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery, Sioux City, Iowa. Norma Jean Dose was the organist for the service and the congregation sang, “Abide With Me” and “How Great Thou Art”. A prayer service was held 7:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton.

Walter Henry “Bud” Rohde was born July 22, 1905, at Mapleton in Monona County, Iowa, the son of Claus and Maggie (Ragis) Rohde. He was baptized as an infant at the Soldier Township Immanuel Lutheran Church and confirmed there in 1919. He lived his entire life in the Mapleton area except for the one and one-half years he was a Sioux City and Storm Lake, Iowa.

On October 31, 1932, Bud was united in marriage to Alma Hesse at Mapleton. He started work in the Golden Rule Store in 1937, working there for six years. He then did livestock trucking from 1945 to 1946. In 1946, he bought McVicker Produce renaming it Bud’s Produce, which he and his wife operated until 1964. He then worked in trucking, hauling gravel, until retiring in 1978. Alma died July 16, 1981.

He was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Mapleton.

Those survivors left to cherish Bud’s memory include one daughter and her husband, Phyllis and her husband, Dale Rotnicke of Mapleton, Iowa and one son and his wife, Leonard and Jane Rohde of Sheldon, Iowa; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson, along with other relatives, neighbors and good friends.

Along with his wife, Bud was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Richard Rohde, one daughter-in-law, Betty Rohde; three sisters and three brothers.

Honorary pallbearers were Jeannie Boisen, Cindy Watterson, Susan Hoogeveen, Barbara Chicoine, Shelly Boyle and Ann Rohde.

Pallbearers were Tim Rohde, Ron Rotnicke, Mick Rotnicke, Jeff Rohde, Craig Rohde and Tom Rohde.
