27 January 2000Mapleton and Smithland area resident dies
Paul J Palmer, age 64, of Washta, Iowa died Monday January 17, 2000, at Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital in Cherokee, Iowa.
Mr. Palmer was born January 21, 1935, at Mapleton, Iowa, the son of Elmer P. and Beulah B. (Farrar) Palmer. He was raised in the Mapleton and Smithland area. On June 27, 1953, he married Marilyn Kirkpatrick in Dakota City, Nebraska. He worked for Van Buskirk Construction in Sioux City for 10-12 years, Jochims Construction in Holstein, Iowa for 10 years and River Sales Company, Sloan, Iowa, for 8 years until retiring in March 1997.
He enjoyed reading and woodworking.
Survivors include eight sons, Jeffrey and Bryan Palmer of Spencer, Nebraska, Curtis and wife, Vicki of Sloan, Iowa, John and wife, Diane of Mapleton, Iowa, Kevin of Georgia, James of Washta, Iowa, Daniel Kirkpatrick and Terry Kirkpatrick, both of Garland, Texas; three daughters, Carla Palmer and friend, Tom McManigal of Denison, Iowa, Debbie and husband, Brent Kroll of Ricketts, Iowa and Kris Thompson of Wisconsin; 28 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mildred and husband, Elvin Burns of Whiting, Iowa and Betty Gerrietts of LeMars, Iowa and two brothers, Donald Palmer of Long Beach, Washington and Gail Palmer of Sergeant Bluff, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Mae Doris Robins; and a son, Sandy Kirkpatrick.
Graveside services were held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, January 20, 2000 at the Little Sioux Township Cemetery at Smithland, Iowa with Pastor Karen Handke officiating. A taped music selection “Amazing Grace” was played. The William Funeral Home of Rodney, Iowa, handled the arrangements.
Honorary bearers were Jeremy Palmer, Donald Palmer, Joshua Castle, Derek Schloesser, Heath Kroll and Cory Theeler.
Casket Bearers were Jeffrey Palmer, John Palmer, Bryan Palmer, James Palmer, Curtis Palmer and Kevin Palmer.
