Hazel K. Ronfeldt 1917-2009

Hazel K. Ronfeldt, 92, of Mapleton, Iowa formerly of Smithland, Iowa passed away Wednesday, December 30, 2009 at Mapleton Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton.

Hazel Katherine Fisher was born October 19, 1917 near Anthon, Iowa the daughter of Robert P. and Hattie (Williams) Fisher. She was a lifetime resident of the Smithland area and graduated from Oto High School.

Hazel and Earl Ronfeldt were united in marriage February 2, 1937 in Onawa, Iowa. The couple lived in the Smithland area and raised their six sons. She worked at the Smithland School for a period of years and then at the Smithland Post Office as a clerk for twelve years. When she and Earl retired they enjoyed traveling, camping and fishing. Earl passed away November 29, 1985. Hazel has been a resident of Maple Heights Nursing Home since 2002.

She was a member of the Smithland United Methodist Church and Ladies Aid and a sixty year member of the American Legion Auxiliary.
Survivors include three sons, Ronald (Janet) of Mapleton, James (Lila) of Newton, Ia. and Stephen (Clarissa) of Smithland, ten grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; one great -great grandson; a sister-in-law, Lucille Fisher of Anthon, Ia. and a brother-in-law and a his wife, Mason and Letha Ronfeldt of Sioux City Ia.

In addition to her husband, Hazel was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters; three brothers; three sons, David, Eugene and Dennis and two granddaughters, Debra, Lynne Ronfeldt.
Funeral services were at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 2, 2010 at Smithland United Methodist Church with Pastor Karen Handke officiating. Music selections were “Amazing Grace: and “In the Garden” with Richard Mack, vocalist and Kay Till, organist. Burial was at Little Sioux Cemetery at Smithland, Iowa. Casket bearers were Tim, Robert, Randy, Jason and Kevin Ronfeldt and Colte Holiman. Honorary bearers were Tammy Ronfeldt, Lisa Crilly, Michelle Ronfeldt, Christina Hawkins and Katherine Dean.

Arrangements were under the direction of Rush Family Care Service in Onawa, Iowa.
