Loyd Torgeir Laupsa, 65, of Soldier, Iowa formerly of Onawa, Iowa died Thursday, February 19, 2009 at a Sioux City Hospital.

Loyd Torgeir Laupsa was born January 20, 1944 in Council Bluffs, Iowa the son of Torgeir and Anna May (Pardee) Laupsa. The family traveled and lived in many locations. Loyd attended barber school in California where he was a licensed barber. In 1968, Loyd and Joyce Chacon were united in marriage in California and four children were born to this union.

He joined the United States Army March 1969 and served in Vietnam until his discharge May 31, 1972.

Loyd and Cynthia Ann Fichthorn were united in marriage December 20, 2001 in Onawa, Iowa. They made their home in the Soldier/Onawa areas.

Loyd was a member of the VFW Post 2266 Hemet, Ca, DAV Post 75 and the American Legion Post 53 at Hemet and served as chaplain a total of 12 years at these posts.

Survivors include his wife, Cynthia Ann of Soldier; a son, Erik Laupsa of Roseville, Ca.; three daughters Jeannine Sipowics, Faith Laupsa Briones and Summer Laupsa Cortez all of Hemet, Ca.; their mom, Joyce Laupsa of Hemet; 13 grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; an aunt and uncle, Bernice and Arnold Clausen of Onawa; three special cousins and their spouses, Ron and Linda Clausen of Sioux City, Iowa, Rod and Darlene Clausen of Salix, Iowa and Evie and Max Bonine of Onawa and a host of relatives living in Norway.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services were held on Saturday February 21, 2009 at Rush Family Chapel in Onawa with Pastor Harvey Hanson officiating. Music selections were “In The Garden”, “The Old Rugged Cross” and “Battle Hymn of the Republic”. Burial was at Belvidere Cemetery with military honors conducted by Loren Hollister Post 496, Mapleton. Visitation was 5:00-8:00 p.m. Friday with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. Casket bearers were Walter “Huli” McCall, Brett Spaulding, John Flecky, Scott Butler, Tom Templeton, Sr. and Walt Ordway. Arrangements were under the direction of Rush Family Care Services.
