BLENCOE, Iowa -- Ila Cartmell, 96, of Onawa, Iowa, formerly of Blencoe, passed away Saturday, Dec. 19, 2009, at Elmwood Care Centre at Onawa.

Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Blencoe United Church of Christ, with Pastor Mary Wells officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery at Blencoe. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, with an Eastern Star service at 6:30 p.m., at Rush Family Care Service in Onawa.

Ila Armada was born March 14, 1913, at Pisgah, Iowa, the daughter of John and Mary (Oviett) Silsby. She was raised in the Pisgah area and graduated from Pisgah High School in 1930 and then attended Commercial Extension Business School at Omaha, Neb.

Ila and Earl Carlson were united in marriage in 1932 and were blessed with the birth of Sharon Dee. Earl passed away in 1941. In 1945, Ila and Clifford "Dick" Cartmell were united in marriage and blessed with the birth of Mary Lee. Dick passed away in 1999. Ila had various jobs in banks, worked in the Monona County Treasurer's Office, and she and Dick also owned and operated Cartmell-Hitchman Insurance.

She was a member of Blencoe United Church of Christ, Queen Esther Chapter 222 Order of Eastern Star, Legion Auxiliary and Chat and Sew Club. Ila and Dick loved traveling and wintered in Texas several years.

Survivors include two daughters and their husbands, Sharon and Rex Wyland of Tucson, Ariz., and Mary and James Ruble of Sergeant Bluff; four grandchildren, Dawn Wyland and Douglas Wyland, both of Tucson, Heidi (Tien Wee) Ruble of Olympia, Wash., and Heather (Mike) Carlson of Sioux City; six great-grandchildren, Michaela, Myranda, Kelsi, Harrison, Madison and Cassidy; a brother, Conley Silsby of Seattle, Wash.; nieces and nephews; many friends; and her special canine friend, Annie.

In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by four brothers and a sister.

Memorials may be directed to Burgess Hospice or Blencoe United Church of Christ.
