COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa -- Merrill D. "Buss" Howland, 74, of Council Bluffs died Friday, March 27, 2009, at the Veterans Hospital in Omaha.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mapleton, Iowa. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the American Legion. Vigil services will be 6 p.m. Tuesday, followed by visitation with the family until 8 p.m., at Cutler-O'Neill-Meyer-Woodring Funeral Home in Council Bluffs.

Merrill was born on July 30, 1934, in Castana, Iowa, to the late Walter and Hallie (Sammons) Howland. He served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

On Nov. 22, 1956, he married Mary Ann Uhl. Merrill later became the owner/operator of A&H Air Conditioning & Service Company.

Merrill is survived by his wife, Mary Ann; a daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Dennis Mesenbrink of Council Bluffs; sons and daughters-in-law, Steve and Brenda Howland of Mapleton, Iowa, Russell and Michelle Howland of Atlanta, Ga., Ricky Howland and Bryan Howland, both of Council Bluffs; sisters, Gertrude Copus, Marilyn Krohnke and Patricia Jochims; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; as well as nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son; two sisters, Viola and Darlene; and a half brother, Rex.

The family will direct memorials.
