WHITING, Iowa -- Ardyce Evonne Westergaard, 89, of Whiting passed away on Saturday, Oct. 17, 2009, at the Pleasant View Care Center in Whiting.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at First Congregational UCC in Whiting, with the Rev. Reva Karstens officiating. Burial will be in Whiting Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the church.

Ardyce Evonne Westergaard was born Dec. 3, 1919, in Early, Iowa, the daughter of Fay and Amber (Hamm) Jackson. Her family moved to Mitchell, S.D., where she graduated from high school in 1937. After attending Sioux City Business College, she worked for Northwestern Mutual Insurance. From 1942 to 1945, she joined the war effort and was employed as a civilian by the U.S. Army at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. She returned to Iowa and worked for a medical practice located in Spencer.

On Sept. 18, 1949, in Spencer, Ardyce married Harold Jens Westergaard, son of Knud and Lucia. She and Harold farmed in the Whiting area and raised their daughters. Besides being a supportive farm wife and mother, she was a faithful member of First Congregational UCC of Whiting. She was honored as 50-year member in 2002. She contributed her time and talent to church choir, Church Council and Women's Fellowship. She was involved in the establishment of the Whiting Pleasant View Care Center.

After the death of her husband in 1973, she remained on the family farm. In 1984 she built a home in Whiting, where it was always a gathering place for food, fun and much love. Her grandchildren would say, "There's no place like home except Grandma's." In 2003 she became a resident of Pleasant View Care Center, where her excellent and compassionate caregivers soon became like family.

Those who remain to cherish her memory are her daughter, Judi (Pratt) and her husband, Steve of Whiting and their children, Brent and Becky Pike of Whiting, and their children, Brenna, Briley and Bristol; Alison (Wiggs) and Jason of Whiting, and their children, Brady, Collin and Keagan; Molly Pratt of Portland, Ore.; and Andrea (Pratt) and Travis Joseph of Washington, D.C.; her daughter, Karen (Corderman) and her husband, Rusty of Newell, Iowa, and their children, Kyle Corderman of Ault, Colo.; Craig Corderman of Ankeny, Iowa; and Trent Corderman of Whiting; her brother and sister-in-law, Dale and Ellen (Westergaard) Jackson of Whiting; nieces and nephews, Dana (Stan Sutter) Blanck, Laurie (Pete) Nelson, Jim (Anne) Jackson, John Jackson and Rick (Marcy) Jackson, and her great nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband; and her brother and sister-in-law, Don and Betty Jackson.

Memorials in her memory may be made to First Congregational UCC of Whiting, the Whiting Public Library and the Whiting Community School.

Pearson Funeral Home in Onawa is in charge of arrangements.
