SOLDIER, Iowa - Catherine "Cathie" Dick, 67, Soldier died Saturday, Sept. 12, 2009, at Creighton University Hospital in Omaha, Neb.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Soldier Lutheran Church in Soldier, with Pastor Meggan Manlove officiating. Burial will be in Soldier Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service of Onawa, Iowa.

Catherine Marlene was born May 14, 1942, at Ute, Iowa, the daughter of Clifford and Dorothy (Lund) Shaffer. She attended rural schools in Mapleton and Moorhead, Iowa, and graduated from Soldier High School in 1960. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church at Ute. After graduation, she worked at the Soldier Cafe and a bank in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Cathie and Arles D. Dick were united in marriage on Feb. 4, 1961. To this union three children were born, James, Arlene and Christy. She was a Stanley Product representative for several years and worked for WCDC Head Start for 13 years, as a cook and later, administrative secretary. After suffering bad health, she helped at Myrna's Florist & Thrift Shop and did baby-sitting.

She was an active member of Soldier Lutheran Church, was a Sunday school and Bible school teacher, circle leader, Spirit Singers and held several offices in WELCA, including president. She was a member of the Jordan Birthday Club, the Friendly Neighborhood Pals and Denim and Lace Square Dancers. She enjoyed camping, square dancing, playing cards and dominos. She cherished the time spent with her family and grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband of 48 years, Arles of Soldier; a son and his wife, James and Trish of Lake City, Iowa; two daughters and their husbands, Arlene and Jeff Nollen of Ida Grove, Iowa, and Christy and Michael Henkel of Lake City, Iowa; 13 grandchildren, Zac, Corey, Cody, Charity, Trenton, Justin and Madyson Dick, Molly and Andy Nollen, Katie and Jordan Henkel, Rose and Jon Powers; a great-grandchild, Zita; three brothers, Dwight (Judy), Gerald (Elaine) and Marvin (Sharon) Shaffer; a sister, Lora (Mike) Butler; three sisters-in-law, Norma (Walter) Baughman, Bette (Richard) Polenske and Rose Dick; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and a special little friend, Grant Gorham.

She was preceded in death by her parents; grandparents; her mother and father-in-law, Harry and Beatrice Dick; a brother-in-law, Murlyn Dick; a nephew, Jason Shaffer; a great-niece, Ashley Gigaroa; a great-nephew, Kurt Baughman; an aunt, Marge Lund; and two close cousins, Judi Harding and Diana Thomas.
