Luella Marten Brown 1916-2009

Luella Christine Julia Marten Brown of San Marcos, Ca., passed away August 22, 2009 at the Tri-City Hospital in Oceanside, Ca.

Luella was born October 19, 1916 in Mapleton, Ia. The daughter of Johann and Minnie (Jessen) Marten. She was baptized November 19, 1916 and confirmed April 10, 1930 at St. Matthews Lutheran Church in Mapleton.

Luella attended school in Mapleton and worked in Mackey’s Café during her teens. She won the “Miss Mapleton” cont4est in 1937 representing Mackey’s café in Mapleton Merchant “Beauty and Personality Contest. Luella moved to California in the early 1940’s. There she continued her career at Kim’s Café in Inglewood Ca.

Luella was married to Raymond Joseph Brown on October 18, 1942. Ray and Lu celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1992. Prior to the party they renewed their wedding vows. They were blessed with two children, Eugene and Julie. Luella was a hard worker and a loving and giving person. Her positive spirit and smile will always be remembered by those who knew her. Most importantly, she was a caring and loving wife, mother, daughter, sister and aunt. She lived for her children’s activities and was a care giver to her nephews and many others.

Luella was a member of Redeemer by the Sea Lutheran Church in San Marcos, Ca.

Luella will be missed by her son, Eugene Brown of Torrence, Ca. and daughter Julie and husband, Kurt Halloway of Sequim, Wa. and her brothers Harold Marten of Keokuk, Iowa, Cliff Marten and wife, Babs of West Des Moines, Iowa, John Marten of Carlsbad, Ca., Paul Martin of Bullhead City, Az. and many relatives and friends.

Luella was preceded in death by her husband, parents, one infant sister and three brothers.

Interment will be held at Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City, Ca. memorials may be given to the charity of your choice.
