James Newell Olson, Whiting, Iowa, died on Monday, May 2, 1988, at Pleasant View Nursing Home in Whiting. Death came at the age of 93 years, 11 Months and 9 days.

He was born May 23, 1894, at Albaton, the son of James and Martha Solien Olson. He married Effie Gunsolley, October 1, 1913, at Onawa. The couple farmed at Smithland and Onawa before moving to Whiting in 1923. Mr. Olson operated the Standard Oil tank wagon and bulk plant at Whiting for 26 years, retiring October 1, 1950. He was employed by Aage Neldeberg Seed Co for 30 years. Mrs. Olson died May 29, 1966, at Onawa. He had been a resident of the nursing home the last three years.

He was a member of the Whiting Methodist Church and Modern Woodmen of America.

Survivors include a son, Donald of Sioux City; two daughters, Mrs. Robert (Doris) Bogenrief of Hinton and Mrs. Dennis (Evelyn) Hall of Sloan; three half sisters, Edith Delashmutt of Onawa and Corrine Patrick and Edith Burdick, both of Denver; a stepsister, Mrs. Margaret Keller of Sioux City; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Raymond; a great grandson, Todd and three sisters.

Service were held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 5, 1988 at the Wood Funeral Chapel in Sloan with Rev. Gary DeGeest officiating. Mrs. Lael Steinhoff, the organist accompanied Rev. and Mrs. Gary DeGeest in the vocal selections “Just A Closer Walk With Thee” and “He Touched Me”.

Bearers were Kent Hall, Terry Hall, Jim Lloyd, Phillip Soul, Donald Copple and Kurt Neldeberg.

Interment was in the Whiting Cemetery .
