Former police officer in Mapleton dies Sept 2

Cornie Siebersma, age 71, of Ankeny, Iowa and formerly of Mapleton, died Saturday, September 2, 2000 at Ankeny, Iowa.

Services were held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, September 6 at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton, with Rev. Edmund Tiedeman officiating. Burial was in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Mapleton, with military honors by the American Legion Loren Hollister Post #496 of Mapleton. Marie Whiteing was the accompanist and soloist for the service and music was “How Great Thou Art” and “What A Friend We Have In Jesus”.

Cornie Siebersma was born September 2, 1929 at Sheldon, Iowa the son of Steve and Hattie (Stapert) Siebersma. He grew up and was educated in Sheldon. He served his country in the United States Army from March 16, 1951 until March 8 1953, stationed in Korea.

On November 2, 1956, Cornie was united in marriage to Joan Lois Van Velzen at Worthington, Minnesota. They lived in Sheldon where he worked for the Sheldon Police Department until 1969, when the family moved to Mapleton, Iowa. He then worked for the Mapleton Police Department and later for the Woodbury County Sheriff’s Department. In 1985 they moved to Santa Cruz, California, where Cornie worked in security. They moved to Ankeny, Iowa in 1992 where they have resided until the present time.

Those survivors left to cherish Cornie’s memory include, Joan his wife of 43 years; one son and his wife, Terry Lee and Kathy Siebersma of Mapleton, Iowa and one daughter and her husband, Judi Lynn and Dennis Wieben of Ankeny, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Amy, LeAnn, Jennie, Brad and Jeff Siebersma and Jamie Jo and Nicole Wieben; one great-grandchild, Bailey Siebersma; two brothers, Steve “Bud” and his wife, Fern of Milford, Iowa and Julius Nook Siebersma and his wife Anna Mae of Coal City, Illinois; three sisters, Loretta Peterson and her husband, Jack of Worthington, Minnesota, Geraldine Borgman and Lucy Wibben, both of Sheldon, Iowa, along with several other relatives, neighbors and good friends.

Cornie was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Jennie, an infant son, Allen Dwayne, and an infant daughter, Jacquelyn.

Honorary pallbearers was Joe Hansen.

Pallbearers were Dennis Wieben , Brad Siebersma, Jeff Siebersma, Stan VandenBerg, Rich Burgman and Frank VandenBerg.
