Former resident of Mapleton dies in Missouri

Irma J. Dorothy, age 87, of Joplin, Missouri, formerly of Mapleton, Iowa, died Tuesday, July 25, 2000, at Spring River Christian Village in Joplin.

She was born in Mapleton, Iowa, in 1913 and attended school in Mapleton and graduated from Mapleton High School. After graduation, she moved to Rockford, Illinois in 1936 where she was a legal secretary until her retirement in 1978. Soon after that she moved to Artesia, Mexico, to assist in any way she could at Artesia Christian College which existed at that time. She was an office secretary, secretarial science instructor, college choir accompanist, college hostress and also helped in the cafteria or any place where there was a need. She loved every minute of it. While living there, she required heart surgery, so in 1989 she moved to Joplin, Missouri to live closer to family members. She was much loved and admired by the Spring Valley Village residents and staff, and also, at the church where she was active until health problems restricted her activities.

Irma had traveled extensively to other parts of the world, especially to places connected with missions. She spent a month in Indonesia with John and Dorothy Harper while they were serving as missionaries there in the 1970's. She was a talented and gifted Christian lady who lived a beautiful, giving, caring life and will be sorely missed by the many, many lives she touched.
