Maxine Veva Skaw Mortensen, 90, of Glendale, California, formely of Moorhead, Iowa died Tuesday, August 29, 2000 at the Elms Convalescent Hospital in Glendale, California.

She was born near Ticonic, Iowa on August 21, 1910, the daughter of Nels and Grace (Alverta) Skaw. She was the eldest of six children. After she graduated from Onawa High School, she continued her studies at the University of Iowa in Iowa City.

On September 5, 1931, she married Ernest Mortensen in Elk Point, South Dakota. They celebrated 52 wonderful years of marriage before Ernest preceded her in death in February 1983. They had been engaged in farming near Moorhead, Iowa for many years.

She was active in her church and many community organizations, such as the Order of Eastern Star, Royal Neighbors, and the 55 Club. She enjoyed music and sang in the Centennial Community county chorus. Maxine was a member of the Sioux City Artists Group and painted in oils, acrylics and charcoal which brought her much pleasure. For many years she and her husband were members of the Bethesda Lutheran Church in Moorhead. After moving to California in 1991, she became a member of the First United Methodist Church of Glendale.

She is survived by three daughters and their husbands, Judy and Bob Steward and Janet and Gail Sohler, all of Yankton, South Dakota and Nancy and Kenneth Heflin of Glendale, California; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a brother, Oran Skaw, a number of nieces and nephews; and many other family and friends who will greatly miss her.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three brothers, Wayne, Wyman and Kenneth; and one sister, Elizabeth.

Memorial Services celebrating her life were held at the Moorhead Christian Church on Friday, September 8, 2000 at 11:00 a.m. with burial following in Spring Valley Cemetery, Moorhead, Iowa. Her son-in-law,the Rev Dr Kenneth L Heflin officiated. There was a reading by Lori Glowcheski "Remember Grandma".

The organist was Mary Lou Kratz and the soloist, Becky Marcum, sang the selection, "The Lord's Prayer". A Medley of Music was by Judy Stewart, pianist. Congregation Hymns were "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Abide With Me".

Interment was in Spring Valley Cemetery, Moorhead, Iowa, with arrangements locally by Pearson Funeral Home and Cremation Sevices, Onawa, Iowa.
