38 Year employee of Mac's Chevrolet Dies

Lawrence V. "Jake" Powell, age 72, of Mapleton, Iowa, died Thursday, September 14, 2000, at Onawa,Iowa.

Services were held 10:30 a.m. Monday, September 18 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mapleton with Rev. Mark Harrington officiating. Burial was in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Mapleton, with military honors by the American Legion Loren Hollister Post #496 of Mapleton. A vigil wake service was held at 7:00 p.m. Sunday at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton.

Lawrence Vincent "Jake" Powell was born July 6, 1928, at Sioux City, Iowa, the son of Howard John and Wilhelmina (Winneke) Powell. He graduated with the Mapleton High School Class of 1947. He served his country with the United States Air Force from 1949 to 1951. On November 15, 1951, Jake was united in marriage to Verna Mae Cooper. She passed away June 15, 1984.

Jake was employed at Mac's Chevrolet and Pontiac as a mechanic for 38 years.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mapleton and served in the past for the Mapleton Volunteer Fire Department.

Those survivors left to cherish Jake's memory include one daughter and her husband, Linda and Bob Kelsey of Mapleton, Iowa; three grandchildren, Shannon Eyer of Mapleton, Iowa, Sherri Heistand and her husband, Andy of Onawa, Iowa and Jenna Kelsey of Mapleton, Iowa; two great-grandchildren, Marcus and Marci Eyer of Mapleton; three brothers, Leonard and his wige, Leona Powell of Soldier, Iowa, Francis and Verna Powell of Sioux City, Iowa and Bernard "Bud" Powell of Denison, Iowa; one sister and her husband, Dorothy Marie and Laverne Olson of Fort Collins, Colorado; and two sister-in-law, Mirian Cooper of Mapleton, Iowa and Voni Martin and her husband, Ralph of Smithland, Iowa, along with many other relatives, neighbors and friends.

Along with his wife, Jake was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Cecil "Jack" and one sister, Doris.

Honorary group were employes of Mac's Chevrolet and Pontiac.

Pallbearers were Ralph Martin, Tim Cooper, Ron Cooper, Dwayne Hupke, Dan Cooper and Dan Scott.
