Mapleton, Iowa-- Leonard E. Wacheldorf, 78, of Mapleton died Tuesday, March 19, 2002, at his daughter's residence in Goodyear, Ariz, following a lengthy illness.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St Peter's United Church of Christ in Mapleton, with Rev. Bob Fritzmeier officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with prayer service at 7:30 p.m. at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton.

Leonard Emil Wacheldorf was born March 7, 1924, in Soldier Township to Emil and Leona (Jacobs) Wacheldorf. On November 9, 1946, he was united in marriage to Darlene Leisinger in Mapleton. Leonard worked his entire life in the Mapleton area. He retired from the city of Mapleton after 30 years of service. He had also served as a volunteer fireman. Darlene died September 7, 1999.

Survivors include his four children, Randy and his wife, Barb of Moorhead, Iowa, Denny and his wife, Nancy of Omaha, Greg and his wife, Linda of Concord, N.C. and Jan Pedersen of Goodyear, Ariz; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two brothers and their wives, Robert "Bob" and Kathy Wacheldorf of Sergeant Bluff and Richard "Dick" and Sherry Wacheldorf of Columbus, Nebr.; three sisters, Phyllis Reinbold of Sioux City, Judy Riley of Mapleton and Norma Marsh and her husband, Bob of Beamer, Neb. a sister-in-law, Margaret Wacheldorf of Mapleton and numerous other relatives, neighbors and good friends.

In addition to his wife, he was also preceded in death by a grandson, Stuart Wacheldorf; his parents; a brother, Elmer Wacheldorf and a sister, Delores, "Tootie" Theil.
