MAPLETON, Iowa -- Mary I. Olson, 94, of Mapleton died Monday, Feb. 25, 2002, at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton, with the Rev. Bob Fritzmeier officiating. Burial will be in Dayton Cemetery, Dayton, Iowa. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mary I. Olson was born to Otis and Mabel (Hall) Olson, on Nov. 27, 1907, in Richland, Mo. She moved with her parents to Burnside, Iowa, when she was very young. She graduated from Burnside High School in 1926. she received her teaching certificate from Des Moines University in 1928 and later her bachelors degree in science from Drake University.

Mary taught school in Rodney, Cushing, Whiting and Fairfield, Iowa for 42 years. She retired from teaching in Fairfield in 1971 and moved to Mapleton.

During her long teaching career, Mary's summer vacations were spent either advancing her education in summer school or in travel. She traveled extensively both domestically and internationally. She took many photographs and enjoyed sharing slides from her journeys with her students and civic groups.

Mary was a member of United Church of Christ, Delta Kappa Gamma, Rebekah Lodge and the Iowa State Education Society.

She is survived by seven nephews, four nieces and thousands of her students.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and two brothers.
