Mrs. Theodore Vandervert Dies

Mrs. Theodore Vandervert died at her home here last Saturday morning at an early hour following an illness of only two days. She had been in her usual health to all outward appearances and had attended to her accustomed duties, had called at her neighbors and was down town on Thursday evening. Shortly after her return home she was suddenly seized and within a few hours it was known that she was fatally ill. Mrs. Vandervert had been a sufferer for several years with a serious malady, yet her death came as a very sudden and severe shock to her family and to her many friends.

Marian J Bentley was born August 27, 1856 in Kane County, Illinois residing there during the earlier period of her life. She was a daughter of Gardner and Clara Bentley. About 43 years ago she went to Alta, Iowa to make her home. There a few years later, she was married to Theodore Vandervert, October 23rd, 1888, to whom she was a good wife and a pleasant companion to the day of her death. After their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Vandervert lived at Great Bend, Kansas, foe a few months, afterward removing to Onawa, Iowa which save for a brief period in the South, has been their home.

In her youth, Mrs. Vandervent united with the Baptist church. At Alta, Iowa, she transferred to the Presbyterian church and coming to Onawa to live, she united with the Congregational church in 1889, of which church she was a most faithful member until her death. The Sunday before her passing she occupied her pew as usual. She was one of those who in the days gone gave unsparingly of her time and her efforts to the building of the church and she has since to its maintenance. She was one of the most earnest workers in the Missionary Society and the Ladies Aid until her death. She was deeply interested in all that concerned the church, rarely missed any of its services, and her sympathies were with very good cause. All her days, she lived an earnest, consecrated, conscientious Christian life, doing her duty always as she saw it.
Mrs. Vandervent was a member of the local G.A>R. Society, had been its president foe several years and held that office at the time of her death. She was also a member of the D.A.R. in both these organizations she will be greatly missed.
Mrs. Vandervent was a women of kindly, sympathetic heart, a good neighbor and a good friend. She will be sorely missed from her home, by her husband, her sister and all her loved ones. She quietly went to sleep and passed away without pain Friday night, Nov 18th, having reached the age of 71 years 2 months and 22 days. She leaves to mourn her loss, her husband, Theodore Vanderent, her sister, Miss Clara Bentley, a half brother, Milo J Bentley of Freewater, Oregon, a step-son, B.C. Vandervent and a step-daughter, Mrs. Nettie Ford, both of Onawa. She leaves behind her the record of a well lived life and a beautiful memory.
Funeral services were conducted at the home Sunday afternoon at two o’clock, Rev Ernest Evans pastor of the Congregational Church paying a very fitting tribute to the life of Mrs. Vandervert.
Flowers in profusion attested the love and esteem of Onawa people and they too seem most appropriate to the life that has gone.
Mesdames Cook ad Deering with violin accompaniment by Mrs. Hartman sang “The City Four Square”, “Abide With Me” and “The Perfect Day”.
Burial was made in the Onawa Cemetery.
