Clarence Burkhart, age 82 of Mapleton, Iowa, died Tuesday, December 28, 2004 in Mapleton.

Memorial service was held 11:00 a.m. Friday, December 31 at St. John's United Methodist Church in Mapleton with Rev. Fred Pilecki officiating. Military honors were by American Legion Loren Hollister Post #496 of Mapleton. Marie Whiteing was the organist for the service and the congregation sang, "One Day At A Time" and "The Old Rugged Cross".

Clarence Burkhart was born to Clarence, Sr. and Violet (VanCleve) Burkhart on April 15, 1922, in Holly Springs, Iowa. He attended schools in Holly Springs, Castana, and Mapleton.

He served in the United States Army, stationed in Germany and France, in World War II. On August 21, 1944, he married Delores Marsh at Onawa, Iowa. To this union were born two children, Jackie and Peggy. He worked as a mechanic at Mac's Chevrolet for several years, ran the B & O Standard Station from the late 1960's to the mid 1970's with his brother-in-law, Keith Oregon and later he worked with Mel Woodward doing carpentry and also helped Jerry Bumstead when needed.

He was an active member of St. John's United Methodist Church in Mapleton. He enjoyed family get togethers, dancing, watching sports on T.V. and most of all making candy and cookies because he knew his family looked forward to all the goodies.

He is survived by Delores, his wife of 60 years; two daughters, Jackie Woodward of Castana, Iowa and Peggy Weber and her husband, Dennis, of Mapleton, Iowa; grandchildren, Tracey, Brett, Michelle, Erin, and Bart; great grandchildren, Skylar, Payton, and Lexi; one brother and sister-in-law, Dean and Donna Payne of Castana and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Francis and two sisters, Betty Jacoby and Twila Oregon.

Arrangements were made under the direction of the Armstrong Funeral Home of Mapleton.
