August 5, 1922-March 25, 2005

Edalene J. McNutt, age 82 of Mapleton, and formerly of Castana, died Friday, March 25, 2005, at Sioux City, Iowa.

Services were held 2:00 p.m. Monday, March 28 at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton with Pastor Bob Fritzmeier officiating. Harvey Hanson gave the eulogy. Burial was in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Mapleton. Benita Davis was the organist for the service and Nancy and Cathy Hanson, vocalists, sang, "One Day at a Time" and "How Great Thou Art". The congregation sang, "Peace in the Valley". A prayer service was held at 7:00 p.m. Sunday at Armstrong Chapel in Mapleton.

Edalene J. McNutt was born August 5, 1922, on a farm near Smithland, Iowa, the daughter of Edwin and Jennie (Callaghan) Claus. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Evangelical Church at German City. On April 20, 1946, she was united in marriage to Darrell McNutt in Sioux City, Iowa. Prior to that time, she worked in a cafe in Smithland. After the marriage, Edalene helped her husband in the filling station at Castana, filling in when he ran his tank wagon route. She also worked at the local restaurant. She later owned and operated McNutt's Sweet Shop in Castana for almost 30 years. Upon her retirement December 31, 1983, Edalene was presented a gold watch with a diamond in it from her customers, a possession she has always treasured.

Darrell passed away July 7, 1963.

She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Grimsley-Thayer Unit #502 of Castana.

Those survivors left to cherish their memories of Edalene include her daughter, Connie Christiansen and her husband, Ronald, of Turin, Iowa; two grandsons, Jeff Hasbrouck and his wife, Jo, of Audubon, Iowa and Jason Hasbrouck and his fiancee, Catherine of Renton, Washington; a step granddaughter, Ronda Arnold and her husband, Mike, of Paynesville, Minnesota; a step grandson, Brian Christiansen of Omaha, Nebraska; step great grandchildren, Jake Christensen of Audubon, Iowa, Nathan, Heather, and Jake Arnold, and Alexis, Madelyn, and Olivia Christiansen; one brother, Richard Claus and his wife, Leora, of Solvang, California; one sister, Lenora Burkhart and one sister-in-law, Macil Claus, both of Smithland, Iowa; and a special niece, Judy Puckett and her husband, Rod, of Solvang, California; a brother-in-law and his wife, Chuck and Mary Lynn McNutt of Grand Junction, Colorado; two sisters-in-law, and their husbands, Bonnie and Wally Parker of Sloan, Iowa and Donnabelle and Bob Craig of Sioux City; along with many nieces and nephews and numerous good friends.

Along with her husband, Edalene was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, one brother, and two brothers-in-law.

Honorary pallbearers were Ronald Burke, Gilbert Gotto and Tim Bruning.

Pallbearers were Jeff Hasbrouck, Jason Hasbrouck, Gary Prell, Jake Christensen, Brian Christiansen and Mike Arnold.

Arrangements were made under the direction of Armstrong Funeral Home of Mapleton.
