Dr. Jack Ganzhorn, age 74 of Mapleton died unexpectedly Sunday, May 29 at his home in Mapleton.

Services were held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 2 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Mapleton with Rev. Dr. Scott Fiege officiating. Burial was in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Mapleton, with military graveside honors by the American Legion Loren Hollister Post #496 of Mapleton. Norma Jean Dose was the organist for the service and Adam Kotula, Dr. Jack's grandson, was the pianist playing "The Rainbow Song". Marie Whiteing was the vocalist singing "Edelweiss". The congregation sang, "The Old Rugged Cross", "Nearer My God To Thee", "Let There Be Peace On Earth" and "Battle Hymn of the Republic". A prayer service was held at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton.

Dr. Jack Lee Ganzhorn was born February 17, 1931, in Logan, Iowa, to Dr. Harold and Surilda (Saulsbery) Ganzhorn. He was a lifelong Mapleton resident. He graduated from the Mapleton High School class of 1949. He served his country in the United States Marine Corp from 1951 to 1953.

Dr. Jack graduated from the University of Iowa College of Medicine in 1961. He completed his internship in Ogden, Utah. Following his return to Iowa, and joining his father, Dr. Harold Ganzhorn, Dr. Jack practiced Family Medicine in Mapleton until his retirement in 1992.

He exchanged wedding vows with Donna L. Sanford on June 28, 1961, at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Mapleton.

Dr. Jack served on the Mapleton School Board for 14 years and on the Maple Heights Nursing Home Board from its beginning until resigning in 2005 as well as numerous other groups and organizations.

Survivors include Donna, his wife of 44 years; one daughter, Suzanne Lee and her husband, Dr. Rudolf Kotula and grandchildren, Adam and Anna, all of Fort Myers, Florida; and stepmother, Marlyn Ganzhorn of Mapleton, Iowa; along with many other relatives.

Dr. Jack was preceded in death by his father and mother.

Honorary pallbearers were Herman Doidge and Claire Prokop.

Pallbearers were Adam Kotula, George Koithan, Irv Walter, Roger Ingram, Wayne Gosch, Bob Conyers and Keith Robinson.

Arrangements were made under the direction of the Armstrong Funeral Home of Mapleton.
