Leonard D. Sanford, age 80 of Mapleton, Iowa, died Friday, September 9, 2005 in Sioux City, Iowa.

Services were held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, September 13 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Mapleton with Rev. Dr. Scott Fiege officiating. Burial was in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Mapleton. Norma Jean Dose was the organist for the service and the congregation sang, "The Old Rugged Cross", "Amazing Grace" and "How Great Thou Art". A prayer service was held at 7:00 p.m. Monday at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton.

Leonard Dennis Sanford was born November 3, 1924, at Mapleton, Iowa, the son of Dennis and Rose (Devine) Sanford. He graduated from Mapleton High School with the class of 1943 and continued to reside in the Mapleton area his entire life. He served his country with the National Guard from 1946 to 1950. On March 14, 1950, Leonard was united in marriage to Doris Druivenga at the Methodist Church in Mapleton. The couple farmed near Mapleton until November of 1994, when they retired and moved into town.

He was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Mapleton. Leonard enjoyed fishing, traveling, morning coffee with friends and was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan.

Survivors include Doris, his wife of 55 years; four daughters and their husbands, Barbara and Mike Kron of Sioux City, Iowa, Nancy and Tom Allen also of Sioux City, Karla and Gary Kluver of Sloan, Iowa, and April and Troy Stout of Apache Junction, Arizona; one son, Roger Sanford and his fiancee, Kim Beltz, of Sloan, Iowa; eight grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; one brother and his wife, Tom and Elsie Sanford, of Mapleton, Iowa and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Julia Johnson; one brother, Wilfred Sanford; and one grandson, Andrew Sanford.

Honorary pallbearers were Bailey Stout, Michelle Mast, Wendy Jindra and Miranda Kluver.

Pallbearers were Todd Kron, Matthew Parr, T.J. Allen, Adam Sanford, Gene Banks and Scott Blakely.

Arrangements were made under the direction of the Armstrong Funeral Home of Mapleton.
