Lawrence G. McGrain, age 98 of Mapleton died Wednesday, May 3, 2006 at Burgess Health Center in Onawa, Iowa.

Services were held 1:30 p.m. Saturday, May 6 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mapleton with Msgr. Mark Duchaine officiating. Burial was in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Mapleton. Bonita Kane was the organist for the service and Sharyl Bruning was the cantor. A rosary was held on Friday at 7:00 p.m., followed by a Knights of Columbus rosary at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton.

Lawrence George McGrain was born October 13, 1907, in rural Mapleton, Iowa, the son of George and Mary (King) McGrain. He grew up in the area and graduated from Mapleton High School. He married Josephine Schleimer on October 8, 1940, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mapleton. The couple farmed in the Mapleton area. Josephine died March 16, 1994.

Lawrence was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mapleton, the Knights of Columbus, and the Farmer's Union.

Survivors include three daughters, Sister Jane McGrain of Dubuque, Iowa, Rita Byrnes of Omaha, Nebraska, and Mary Bond and her husband, Eldon, of Mukilteo, Washington; three sons and their wives, Carl and Nancy McGrain, David and Karla McGrain, and Ronald and Trudy McGrain, all of Mapleton, Iowa; two sisters-in-law, Lucille Schleimer of Battle Creek, Iowa and Ruth Schleimer of Mapleton, Iowa; 14 grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Lawrence was preceded in death by his parents, George and Mary McGrain; one sister, Helen Doidge; and one brother, Leo McGrain.

Pallbearers were Nathan Fritz, Philip McGrain, Kevin McGrain, Eric Bond, Doug Weichbrodt and Sean Barragan.

Arrangements were made under the direction of the Armstrong Funeral Home of Mapleton.
