Leona B. Savery, age 92 of Ute, died Monday, May 29, 2006 in Mapleton.

Services were held 10:00 a.m. Friday, June 2 at Ute Christian Church in Ute with Pastor Bob Fritzmeier and Pastor Clela Anderson officiating. Burial was in Jordan Township Cemetery, rural Soldier, Iowa. Joyce Hanson was the organist for the service and the congregation sang, "In The Garden" and "Amazing Grace". A prayer service was held at 7:00 p.m. Thursday, June 1 at Armstrong Chapel in Ute.

Leona Barbara Savery was born February 28, 1914, near Castana, Iowa, the daughter of James Walter and Barbara (Bowman) McCall. She attended country school in her early years and went on to attend two years of high school in Soldier, Iowa. In order to get her teaching certificate by taking part in the Normal Training Program, Leona completed her last two years of high school in Onawa, Iowa where she graduated with the Onawa High School class of 1930. Her first teaching assignment was at a country school west of Onawa.

She married Elmer Savery April 29, 1933, in Elk Point, South Dakota. They farmed in the Moorhead, Soldier, and Ute, Iowa area, retiring into Soldier in 1984. Elmer died November 20, 1996.

Leona was devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She had a great love for children and touched the hearts of many.

She was a member of the Ute Christian Church, where she taught Sunday School and was a member of the Ladies Aid. She belonged to the Order of the Eastern Star, and was a Charter Member of the 900 Club. She served as President of the Band Boosters, and was substitute school teacher for several years in Soldier and Moorhead.

Survivors include a son, Shurrell of Soldier, Iowa; a son, Norman and friend, Michelle, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; three grandchildren, Steven Savery of Lincoln, Nebraska, Shelly Powley of Fremont, Nebraska, and Stacy English of Sergeant Bluff, Iowa; and six great grandchildren.

Along with her husband, Leona was preceded in death by her parents; an infant son and daughter; five brothers, Joe, Dale, Wayne, Marvin, and Eugene McCall.

Honorary pallbearers were all of Leona's grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Gary McCall, Russell McCall, Mike McCall, Walter McCall, Steven Savery and David Moorhead.

Arrangements were made under the direction of the Armstrong Funeral Home of Ute.
