Catherine Arlene Bengston was born at Linn Grove, Iowa, September 29, 1927, the daughter of Samuel and Catherine Mangold Endreson. She was raised on the farm near Alta, Iowa and was graduated from the Fairview High School with the class of 1945.

On November 22, 1945 Catherine was united in marriage with Darrell Ernest Bengston at her parents' home near Alta. They made their home in Alta and were employed in Storm Lake. In 1954 they moved to Mapleton, Iowa, where Catherine assisted her husband at their Firestone Store and later was employed at the Mapleton Trust Bank. While residing in Mapleton Catherine was active in St. Matthew Lutheran Church teaching Sunday School and Bible School.

In 1970 the Bengstons moved to Denison, Iowa, where Catherine was employed as a bookkeeper at Woodbury, Wheeler and Johnson until retiring. Following her retirement from fulltime employment Catherine continued to do bookkeeping for family and friends. In their retirement years, Catherine and Darrell enjoyed spending the winter months in the southern states.

Darrell died April 12, 1993 and Catherine continued to make her home in Denison.

In her spare time through the years, Catherine enjoyed playing piano, playing cards, sewing, free lance bookkeeping, golfing, cooking, watching sports and most of all the joy of spending time with her grandchildren and attending their events.

She was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Denison.

Catherine died Thursday morning, September 23, 2004 at Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa. At the time of her death she had been blessed 76 years, 11 months and 24 days.

Catherine was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel and Catherine Endreson, her husband, Darrell, her son, Roger Bengston in 1998, granddaughter, Tammy Bengston, two brothers, Harris and Omer Endreson and two sisters, Irene Endreson and Inez Hegna.

Those remaining to cherish her memory include two daughters, Shirley Bengston and Nancy Gesy, both of Denison, Iowa; daughter-in-law, Patty Bengston of Phoenix, Arizona; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one brother, Lloyd Endreson and his wife, Alice of Alta, Iowa, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, September 27, 2004 at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa, with the Rev. David Loeschen officiating. Music for the service included two instrumental selections, "Just As I Am" and "What A Friend We Have In Jesus" with Mary Kuhlmann serving as musician. Pallbearers were Steve Stoll, Jeff Stoll, Mark Gesy, Jason Gesy, Brent Bengston and Rob Krueger. Interment was at the Scandinavian Cemetery, Alta, Iowa. Following the interment the family invited everyone to join them at the C&C Restaurant in Alta for lunch and fellowship. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison was entrusted to provide arrangements and services.
