Pearl E. Jochims, age 83 of Mapleton, Iowa, died Sunday, August 1, 2004, in Mapleton.
Services were held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, August 5 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Mapleton with Pastor Scott Fiege officiating. Burial was in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Mapleton. Norma Jean Dose was the organist for the service and Ashley Gosch, soloist, sang "Amazing Grace". Congregational hymns were "How Great Thou Art" and "Abide With Me". A prayer service was held at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Armstrong Funeral Chapel in Mapleton. Eulogies were by Randy Jochims and Theresa Rowland.

Pearl Elizabeth Jochims was born January 9, 1921, at Mapleton, Iowa, the daughter of Herman and Elizabeth (Rhode) Marten. She was baptized February 6, 1921 and confirmed April 14, 1935 both at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Mapleton. She graduated from high school and attended college for one year. She married Elmer Jochims in Sioux City, Iowa

She taught country school and later worked at an aircraft assembly plant in Englewood, California. After returning to Mapleton, Pearl was a waitress and cook at the R and R Cafe and the Mapleton Bowling Alley.

She was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Mapleton where she enjoyed attending services and church activities. She was a loyal Iowa Hawkeye fan. The greatest pleasure in Pearl's life was found in her family who will miss her deeply. She raised eight children on her own and had a special love for each of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She also loved her friends and was known by all for her optimistic and nonjudgemental attitude.

Those survivors left to cherish Pearl's memory include five daughters, Beverly McDermott of Charter Oak, Iowa, Bonnie Crilly and her husband, Frank, of Danbury, Iowa, Belinda Bartels and her husband, David, of Charter Oak, Iowa, Birdie Jochims of Mapleton, Iowa, and Niece Jochims of St. Petersburg, Florida; one son and his wife, Randy and Cindy Jochims of Mapleton, Iowa; 14 grandchildren, Theresa Rowland, Chad, Kelli, Ryan, and Keri McDermott, Shawn, Shane, and Steven Gosch, Annie Crilly, Brad, Chris, and Jacy Jochims, and Neal Bartels and Erin Blume; 21 great grandchildren; and one sister and her husband, Amanda and Edgar Rossow of Ida Grove, Iowa along with other relatives, neighbors and good friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Barbara Gosch, one son, Dewey Jochims, and one great grandson, Tyler Michael Gosch.

Honorary pallbearers were Bud Johnson, Bill Wettengel, James Ehlers, Cliff Marten, Edgar Rossow and Raymond Else.

Pallbearers were grandsons, Shawn Gosch, Chad McDermott, Shane Gosch, Steve Gosch, Chris Jochims and Neil Bartels.

Arrangements were made under the direction of the Armstrong Funeral Home of Mapleton.
