Donald M. Flanigan, age 69, of Mapleton, Iowa, died Friday, January 9, 2004 at Sioux City, Iowa.
Services were held 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 13, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Danbury with Msgr. Mark Duchaine officiating. Concelebrant was Rev. Richard Ball. Burial was in the Danbury Catholic Cemetery with military graveside honors by the American Legion Loren Hollister Post #496 of Mapleton. A Vigil Wake Service was held at 7:00 p.m. Monday, January 12, followed by the rosary by the Knights of Columbus at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Danbury.

Donald Martin Flanigan was born August 2, 1934 in Sioux City, Iowa, the son of Martin Joseph and Henrietta (Murphy) Flanigan. He was raised on a farm in Soldier Township in Crawford County. He attended rural school and graduated from Charter Oak High School with the class of 1943. He joined the Army National Guard at Denison while in high school and was honorably discharged in July 1959.

On November 21, 1964, Donald was united in marriage to Darlene Berns at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Carroll, Iowa. He worked in long distance trucking until 1971. He then farmed until May of 1991 and became an independent contractor for Roadway Package Systems which later changed to Fed Ex Ground Package Delivery in Sioux City. Don received a 10 year Safe Driving Award from Fed Ex in 2002. He retired in September, 2002.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Danbury and the Knights of Columbus. He served his parish as a Eucharistic Minister since November of 1987. Don enjoyed reading and loved to visit with family and friends.

Survivors include Darlene, his wife of 39 years; two sons, Bryan of Mapleton, Iowa and Dennis and his fiancee, Mellisa Salmen, of Sioux City, Iowa; one grandson, Keegan; one brother, Robert Flanigan of Sioux City; and one sister, JoAnne Seufert and her husband, Don, of Ute, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Joseph.

Pallbearers were Joe Seufert, Mike Flanigan, Kelly Koskovich, Mark Pudenz, Martin Flanigan, Arnold Grell, Jr., Ron O'Hern and Duane Reiling.

Arrangements were made under the direction of the Armstrong Funeral Home of Mapleton-Danbury.
