Shirlene Nielsen, age 59 of Mapleton, Iowa, died Sunday, April 4, 2004 at her residence.

Services were held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 6 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Mapleton with Pastor Scott Fiege officiating. Burial was in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Mapleton. Norma Jean Dose was the organist for the service and the congregation sang, "Amazing Grace", "I Know That My Redeemer Lives" and "How Great Thou Art". A prayer service was held at 7:00 p.m. Monday at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton.

Shirlene Ann Nielsen was born January 10, 1945 at Ponca, Nebraska, the daughter of Richard and Arlene (Harder) Blohm. She graduated from Allen High School with the class of 1963.

On October 22, 1966, she married Mike Nielsen. Along with raising her three children, she was a homemaker and owned and operated a clothing and drapery business in Mapleton.

She was an active member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Mapleton. Shirlene enjoyed sewing, reading, and spending time with her grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband, Mike Nielsen of Mapleton; her children, Richard Nielsen of Arnold's Park, Iowa, Jolene and Glenn Pudenz of Lee Summit, Missouri, and Carla McBride of Sioux City, Iowa; five grandchildren, Sheena and Shelby Nielsen, Kyle and Stuart Pudenz, and Bailey McBride; two sisters and their husbands, Cheryl and Ed Baker of Bellevue, Nebraska and Roxanne and Fred Stuartz of York, Nebraska; one brother and his wife, Richard and Arlene Blohm of Martingsburg, Nebraska and her parents, Richard and Arlene Blohm, also of Martinsburg, Nebraska.

She was preceded in death by one grandson, Alex Pudenz.

Pallbearers were Doug Dahl, Neil Blohm, Wayne Kafton, Joe Christophersen, Darrell Scott, Alan Nielsen, Arvin Kafton, Greg Kafton and Dean Uhl.

Memorials may be directed to Hospice of Siouxland, 224 4th Street, Sioux City, Iowa 51101.

Arrangements were made under the direction of the Armstrong Funeral Home of Mapleton.
