MAPLETON, Iowa -- August Meyer, 97, of Mapleton died Monday, June 21, 2004, at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Mapleton, with the Rev. Scott Fiege officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Sioux City. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton.

August Albert Henry Meyer was born Jan. 4, 1907, in Mapleton, the son of Carl and Martha (Farnall) Meyer. On April 1, 1907, he was baptized into the Lutheran faith at the Lutheran church in Mapleton and was confirmed there at the age of 14, in March 20, 1921. His life's work was in farming. His favorite pastime, when the day's work was done, was playing baseball with his brothers and friends.

On Sept. 5, 1948, he married E. Nadean Andersen at the parsonage in Onawa, Iowa. The couple lived and worked on the same farm until retiring in 1970. In 1971, they sold the farm and moved into Mapleton. Nadean died Nov. 28, 1993.

He was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, which he helped construct in 1949. He served as a caretaker at the church for several years. He also served on the Hickory Grove and Smithland (Iowa) school boards. In recent years, his pastimes included playing cards, dart ball, bowling and playing pool. He loved to garden and especially enjoyed his flower garden.

Survivors include 10 nieces and four nephews, Esther Rickert, Opal Maguire, Alta Patterson, Dora Chellew, Wilma Siefker, Mahela Wendt, Ralph Kruse, Marvin Kruse, Howard Kruse, Clara Hoffmeir, Delores Gosch, Shirley Young, Marian Schuldt and Ronald Engelke; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

Along with his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Carl, Gerhardt and Emiel; five sisters, Meta, Freda, Martha, Clara and Ida; and two nephews, Arnold Fick and Wilfred Fick.

Pallbearers were Scott Anderson, Greg Wilkens, Rick Wendt, James Richert, Wade Schuldt and Hans Hoffmier.

Arrangements were made under the direction of the Armstrong Funeral Home of Mapleton.
