18 Jan 2002Carl W. Berndt, 78, of Sioux City died Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2002, at his residence.
Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel, with the Rev. LeRoy Struble officiating. Burial will be in Grant Cemetery, Rodney, Iowa. Visitation will be 2 to 8:30 p.m. today, with the family present 7 to 8:30 p.m., at the funeral home.
Mr. Berndt was born Nov. 9, 1923, in Danbury, Iowa, the son of Fred John Edmund and Elsie Vivian (Beard) Berndt. He was raised in the rural Woodbury County, Iowa area. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean Conflict.
He married Marie Ferdig on June 29, 1946, in Sioux City. He had lived in South Dakota for a few years, but spent most of his life in Sioux City. He worked has a farm hand for several years as a young man. He then worked at the Sioux City Foundry as a truck driver for 23 years, retiring in August 1988.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting and being outdoors. He enjoyed the time spent with his family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Marie of Sioux City; two sons, Carl Berndt and his special friend, Linda Swanson, and Donald Berndt, all of Sioux City; three daughters, Kay Cooper of South Sioux City and JoAnne and her husband, David Franke, and Linda and her husband, Richard Radley, all of Sioux City; two sisters, Dorothy Reinbold of Sioux City and Gloria Jean Reinbold of Bath, S.C.; 10 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Robert Berndt; and three brothers, Fred Berndt and two infant brothers.
Pallbearers will be Larry and Dennis Gardner, Rick, Jeff and Bruce Ferdig and Kip Reinbold.
Memorials in Carl's name may be directed in care of the family.
