4 Mar 2004Marie E. Berndt, 74, of Sioux City died Monday, March 1, 2004, at her residence following a lengthy illness.
Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel, formerly Nelson-Berger Morningside Chapel, with the Rev. Roy Struble officiating. Burial will be in Grant Township Cemetery, Rodney, Iowa. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.
Marie was born Jan. 28, 1930, in Ticonic, Iowa, to Floyd and Lillian (Holbrook) Ferdig. She was raised in the Smithland and Oto, Iowa areas.
She married Carl Berndt on June 29, 1946, in Sioux City. She was employed at Inter Bake Foods for 17 years, where she worked in several areas of the company. Mr. Berndt died Jan. 16, 2002, in Sioux City.
She is survived by two sons, Carl E. Berndt Jr. and his special friend, Linda Swanson, and Donald E. Berndt, both of Sioux City; three daughters, Kay Cooper of Sioux City, Joanne and her husband, David Franke, of Allen, Neb., and Linda and her husband, Richard Radley, of Sioux City; a brother and his wife, Jan and Barb Ferdig of Freeport, Texas; 10 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Robert L. "Bob" Berndt; a sister, Fern Gardner; and two brothers, LeRoy and Ladean Ferdig.
Pallbearers will be Terry Gardner, Scott Gardner, David Radley, Troy Cooper, Robert Giogenti and Jason Pallos. Honorary pallbearers will be her grandchildren.
