This community was greatly shocked last Saturday evening when word was circulated about announcing the sudden death of Mrs August Bartels. But very few people knew she was alling, she having only been taken sick three days before with stomach trouble, but in such an acute form that medical aid could bring her no relief and she passed away at 5 o'clock Saturday afternoon.

Mrs Bartels was born in Provinz Pommer, Germany, August 1, 1843 and was in consequence 59 years, 10 months and 13 days old. She was married to August Bartels in 1864 and came to Crawford County in 1882. The twenty-six years of her life spent in this community were full of toll and econemical living. Coming to this country with her husband with practically nothing but their hands, they set about to work and scrupulously saved until a goodly fortune was amassed and were the owners of a fine section of land. Thinking to spend the remainder of their lives in rest and well-earned retirement they bought a nice home in town and only this spring moved in to occupy it. How often are our hopes blasted. After only a few short months death catered the home and took away wife and mother and it is now torn and broken.

She was greatly devoted to her family, was highly esteemed as a neighbor, and was a friend to all who knew her. She was the mother of six children, all of whom are now living in this vicinity, namely Fred Bartels, Max Bartels, Mrs Chas Vandebur, Mrs John Ill and Miss Anna Bartels.

Funeral services were held at the Lutheran church in this city on Monday afternoon, Rev Wehking officiating and the remains laid to rest in the Hartleben Cemetery.
