From the Soldier Sentinel, March 1933. Josephine died March 4, 1933

Mrs. Holstein Wingate Dies

Mrs. H.A. Wingate passed away at her home in Soldier early Saturday morning following a few days serious illness from a paralytic storke (sic) and heart failure. Mrs. Wingate was a daughter of the late Mr. And Mrs. John Hanson and had lived practically all of her life in or near Soldier. She was prominent in church and community affairs and leaves a large circle of friends to mourn her departure.

Services were conducted for Mrs. Holstein Wingate on Monday afternoon, from the home at 1:30 p.m. and from the Soldier Lutheran town church at 2:00 p.m. Rev. O.B. Anderson of Onawa officiated.

Mrs. Holstein Wingate (nee Josephine Matilda Hanson) was born in Ursko (sic) Norway, May 11, 1870. After a brief illness, consisting of heart attack, followed by a stroke, she slept away in the Lord at 1:30 a.m. Saturday morning, March 4th (1933), at the age of 62 years, 9 months, and 21 days.

Mrs. Wingate was baptized as an infant into the Lutheran faith. She renewed this covenant with God thru confirmation at the Soldier Lutheran church. She lived this faith and went to sleep trusting in the Lord as her redeemer.

In the spring of 1881 (sic), Mrs. Wingate came to this country from Norway and settled in Soldier where she made her home. In March 1894 she was united in marriage to Mr. Holstein Wingate. They were blessed with three children, one son, Lyman J. of Soldier; and two daughters, Mrs. Bennett Lee of Mapleton, Iowa, and Mrs. Hjalmer Nelsen of Soldier, who together with the husband mourn her departure. There are two sisters, Mrs. F.J. Whittemore of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Mrs. T.S. Thoreson, of Soldier, Iowa, and one brother. Carl J. Hanson of Soldier who survive. There are eight grandchildren. These together with many relatives and friends mourn her departure, but who thank God that she fought the good fight of faith and has won the crown of life. Blessed be her memory. "The righteous shall enter into eternal life."

"Behold the host arrayed in white,
Like thousand snow-clad mountains bright,
With palms they stand-Who are this band
Before the throne of light?
These are the ransomed throng, the same
That from the tribulation came
And in the flood of Jesus blood
Are cleansed from guilt and shame."

[Notes from Willis Hanson: She was born on the Bjornstad place in a forest and by Lake Ulvikjoen on the West Nordbye farm in Aurskog (Urskog was an old spelling and the name of a fort protecting Norway from Sweden), Norway. Her more probable date of emigration with the family was in 1880 rather than 1881. Holstein died December 23, 1943
