WHITING, Iowa -- Elliot H. "Bus" Gulick, 91, of Whiting died Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2003, at Pleasant View Care Center in Whiting from complications following pneumonia.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at First Congregational Church in Whiting, with the Rev. Reva B. Karstens officiating. Burial will be in Harrison Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with a Masonic service at 7:30 p.m. conducted by Weston Lodge 562 A.F. & A.M., at Rush Family Care Service in Onawa, Iowa.

Elliot, better known as "Bus", was born Oct. 29, 1912, in Woodbury County, Iowa, the son of William and Agnes (Anderson) Gulick. In 1929, the family moved to Whiting, where he attended school and graduated with the class of 1931. He enrolled at the University of Iowa, but did not return in the fall of 1933, due to an agricultural accident resulting in the loss of his left hand. Despite this "handicap", he lead a full life filled with many sports, teaching his daughter to play tennis, swim and shoot a rifle. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, enjoying a summer residence on Stalker Lake in Minnesota for more than 20 years. Golf was his favorite sport and his one handed swing was straight and true.
He married Ruth Brooks on July 19, 1941. they had 61 years together before she preceded him in death Sept. 4, 2002.

His careers included clerk of the District Court in Onawa, and office manager and adjuster for Grinnel Mutual Insurance. He retired at the age of 65, but continued to work out of his home, selling insurance for the next five years.

He enjoyed a very active membership in the Fraternal Order of Masons, joining Weston Lodge 562 A.F. & A.M. in 1937, and the Scottish Rite Bodies in 1949. He served the Grand Lodge of Iowa as Grand Tyler from 1966 to 1967, and received his 33rd Degree in 1981. He was a member of the Sioux City Abu Bekr Shrine since 1963 and enjoyed singing with the Chanters.

He was a long time member of First Congregational Church and was a choir member for more than 50 years.

He is survived by a daughter and her husband, Sharon and Steven Wildemuth of Bettendorf, Iowa; and two grandsons, Greg Fuller of St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, and Brian Fuller of Boulder, Colo.

Memorials may be directed to First Congregational Church or the Shrine Children's Hospital.
