Castana, Iowa- Raymond "Bob" Lane, 76, of Castana died suddenly Thursday, Feb. 13, 2003.

Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton, Iowa. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the American Legion Grimsley-Thayer Post 502 of Castana and the American Legion Aaby Post 442 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5606, both of Ute, Iowa. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Sunday with a Masonic service at 7 p.m. conducted by the Vesper Lodge 223 A.F. & A.M. all at the funeral home.

Raymond Lawrence "Bob" Lane was born April 7, 1926, in Grtgle, Minn., the son of Francis and Helma (Christiansen) Lane. In 1929, the family moved to Castana, where he grew up and received his education. He served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps in World War II. Upon his honorable discharge, he returned to Castana, where he worked in construction as a heavy equipment operator all his life.

On Jan. 16, 1988, he was united in marriage to Carolyn Smith in Kingman, Ariz.

He was a life time member of the American Legion Grimsley-Thayer Post 502 of Castana and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5605 of Ute. He also was a member of Masonic Lodge Vesper Lodge 223 A.F. & A.M., Scottish Rites and Abu Bekr Shrine. He was a retired member of the International Union of Operating Engineers.

Survivors include his wife, Carolyn: two sons, Rick Lane and his wife, Betty, of DesMoines and Kim Lane of Ute: a daughter, Marsha Jividen of South Sioux City: two stepsons, Mickey Smith and his wife, Tammy, and Russel Smith, all of Mason City, Iowa: a stepdaughter, Becky Hubacher of Mason City, 15 grandchildren: nine great-grandchildren: a brother and his wife, Gordon and Delia Lane of Ute: three sisters, Myrtle Steffen of Long Beach, Calif., Luverne Swanson of Midiera, Calif., and Eunice and her husband, Arnold Zediker, of Sioux City; and several other relatives, neighbors and good friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents: a brother, Lloyd, who was killed in World War II: a sister, Totty: three brothers-in-law, Carl Steffen, Myron Swain and Dick Swanson; and a son-in-law, Mike Jividen.
