ONAWA, Iowa -- Mabel R. Chute, 97, of Onawa passed away Tuesday, Jan., 28, 2003, at Pleasant View Care Center in Whiting, Iowa.

Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at United Methodist Church in Onawa, with the Rev. Chuck Layton officiating. Burial will be in Onawa Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Rush Family Care Service in Onawa.

Mabel was born June 4, 1905, on the family farm near Sioux City, the daughter of Frank and Katy (White) Taft. She graduated from Sioux City Central High School in 1924. She attended Cedar Falls (Iowa) Teacher's College.
She married Frank Chute on May 27, 1926, at her parents' home. The couple farmed near Sioux City, Bronson and Whiting, Iowa. Mr. Chute passed away Feb. 12, 1976. She moved to Center Heights in Onawa in 1978.

She was a member of United Methodist Church in Onawa. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting and made many hats and booties for new babies at Burgess Memorial Hospital in Onawa. She especially enjoyed gardening and caring for her flowers.

Survivors include four daughters, Dorothy and her husband, Everett Sorenson, of Onawa, Ruth and her husband, Don Murphy, of Fairbanks, Alaska, Rosemary Chute of Virginia Beach, Va., and Margaret "Meg" and her husband, Jim Polly, of Whiting; five grandchildren, Nick Sorenson of Onawa, Kathy Murphy and her friend, Tom Elmore, of Anchorage, Alaska, Mike Polly and his wife, Melissa, of Ames, Iowa, Melanie Cooley of Sioux City and Melissa and her husband, Lou Jones, of Salix, Iowa; six great-grandchildren, Macey Wynn, Tori, Taylor and Nathan Cooley and Abagail and Hannah Jones; and two great-stepgrandchildren, Elizabeth and Mike Jones.

In addition to her husband, she was also preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, George and Clarence Taft; and a grandson, Daniel Sorenson.
