ONAWA, Iowa -- Paul L. Smith, 84, of Onawa passed away Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003, at Elmwood Care Centre in Onawa.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First Congregational United Church of Christ in Onawa, with the Rev. John Noer officiating. Burial will be in Kennebec Cemetery, Castana, Iowa. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Rush Family Care Service in Onawa.

Paul was born Sept. 9, 1918, in Castana, the son of Fred and Nellie (Daugaard) Smith. He was raised in Castana and graduated from Castana High School in 1935.
He married Caryl Zediker on Jan. 7, 1941, in Sioux City. He was a lifelong farmer near Castana until a farm accident forced his retirement in 1974.

He was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ and a previously a member and served on the board of trustees at Castana Community Church. In addition, he served as a Kennebec Township trustee from 1951 to 1974, and served on the Castana Community School board.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Caryl; two sons, John and his wife, Dee Smith of Chesterfield, Mo., and Clark Smith of Castana; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister and her husband, Dorothy and Ralph Perdue of Fairbanks, Alaska; and two nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter-in-law, Julie Smith.
