ONAWA, Iowa -- Dale Pash, 88, of Onawa died Friday, July 25, 2008, at Burgess Health Center in Onawa.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. John's Catholic Church, with Father O'Kane as celebrant. Burial will be in Onawa Cemetery, with military honors conducted by American Legion, David McNeill Post 129 and the U.S. Navy. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, with a Scripture prayer service at 7 p.m., at Rush Family Care Service in Onawa.

Dale was born Feb. 2, 1920, at Coffey, Mo., the son of Harvey Raymond and Mamie Ethel (Fields) Pash. He moved with his family to Harlan, Iowa. He spent some time in Colorado and California before enlisting in the U.S. Navy on Nov. 11, 1941. He was assigned to the USS Colorado BB45 and served as gun captain on a 16-inch gun (the ship's largest gun). Dale was very proud to have served on the Colorado. It was the most decorated and had more "well dones" by the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II than any battleship in the South Pacific.

Dale was awarded 10 battle stars in the South Pacific and chose to stay with the Colorado rather than having a higher rank and being assigned another ship. He was honorably discharged on Oct. 23, 1945, but stayed in contact with his fellow sailors through his membership with the USS Colorado Alumni Association. After his discharge, Dale returned to Harlan and was a body repairman for Orv Rocker Ford.

On Feb. 14, 1949, he and Mary Phyllis Bendon were united in marriage in Lancaster, Calif. In 1954, the couple moved to Onawa and bought a radiator shop which they operated as Pash Radiator Repair until 1965, when they expanded to Pash Radiator Sales and covered five states in the Midwest area with sales and supplies to 500 to 600 customers. Dale was still very active in the business and was highly respected and known as "The Boss" until his death. Phyllis died May 17, 1999.

He was a member of St. John's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and American Legion David McNeill Post 129 and was a former member of the Order of Fraternal Eagles. He enjoyed caring for his lawn and watching Lawrence Welk on Saturday nights.

Survivors include a son, Dale "Bud" Pash and his fiancee, Cindy Hammer of Onawa; a daughter and her husband, Lisa and Charlie Meadows of Onawa; three grandchildren, Heidi (Andy) Gage of Whiting, Iowa, Carissa Meadows of Fremont, Neb., and Bridget Meadows of Onawa; two stepgrandchildren, Angela and Miranda Hammer of Onawa; four great-grandsons, Jordan, Gavin and Jonathon Gage and Blake Albert; a brother and his wife, Olin and Crystal Pash of Harlan; a sister, Lefa Somerville of Texas; many nieces and nephews; and a special family friend, Twinkle Crosgrove of Turin, Iowa.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Stacy, Ora, Truman, Nelson and Donald Pash; sisters, Hazel Schroeder, Edna Rhea Pash, Lillian Jenson, Doris McCarty, Dorothy Mailhot, Leta Evans and Jessa Jensen.
