6 January 1972Donald Edward Stebbins the son of Benjamin and Ima Stebbins was born August 24, 1912 at Mondamin, Iowa. He graduated from Mondamin high school and lived there until a young man. After marriage he moved to Onawa and lived in that community until 1947 at which time he moved to Denison. While in Denison he operated a sheet metal shop there. In 1954 Don came to Mapleton where he resided for the remainder of his life. He worked for the Haubrich construction company as a plumber for several years. He later worked for Corbins plumbing and Heating. For the last 6 1/2 years he was employed by the town of Mapleton.
Mr. Stebbins was married to Clara May Rockwell on August 17, 1937 at Onawa. To this union 2 sons were born. His death came unexpectedly on Friday, December 17,1971 while at work in a sewer ditch cave-in. He had reached the age of 59 years 3 months and 23 days.
Survivors include 2 sons; Richard and William both of Newton, Kansas. 2 grandsons; 4 sisters; Mrs. Raymond (Ada) Langren, of Hackensack, Minnesota; Mrs. Paul (Vivian) Rowland, Turin, IOwa, Mrs. (Leone) Donald Brown of Castana; and Mrs. William (Irma) Donovan, Kettering, Ohio. 1 brother; Leslie of Minneapolis, Minnesota.
He also leaves other distant relatives and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services were held Monday, December 20th at 10:30 a.m. at the Walter Chapel, Mapleton, Iowa. Rev. Everett Epperson officiated. Organist was Hazel Bruning.
Casketbearers were Leonard Wacheldorf, Harry Loy, Lloyd Meyer, Dennis Nutt, Ronald Petersen and Cliff Bielenberg.
Honorary Pallbearers were Town Employees, Mayor and Town Council. Interment was in the Onawa Cemetery under the direction of the Walter Funeral Services of Mapleton.
