WHITING, Iowa -- Wayne L. Carlson, 82, of Whiting, formerly of South Sioux City, Odebolt, Iowa, and rural Villisca, Iowa, passed away Thursday, Nov. 28, 2002, at Pleasant View Care Center in Whiting.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Wolfe Funeral Home in Villisca, with the Rev. Sandra Wainwright officiating. Burial will be in Villisca Cemetery. Visitation will be 7 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Wayne was born to Otto J. and Anna (Josephson) Carlson on the family farm in rural Page County, Iowa, on April 29, 1920. He was baptized and confirmed at Mamrelund Lutheran Church in Stanton, Iowa.

On Dec. 24, 1940, Wayne married Mildred Stein in Stanton. Their marriage was blessed with the birth of three sons, Bob, Ron and Dennis, and two daughters, Nancy and Deborah. For more than 20 years, Wayne farmed in Page, Montgomery and Taylor counties before becoming a manager at Lakin Ranch near Odelbolt. He later was a manager of cattle operations of Shinrone Farms and prior to retirement, moved to Whiting to manage Lakin Farms.

Wayne was especially active in youth organizations and dedicated more than 10 years of leadership to 4-H work in Page and Taylor counties, including service as a member of the Taylor County 4-H Council. He served as president of the Villisca Athletic Booster Club. As a result of his support and work with the Reno Smith FFA Chapter, Wayne was named Honorary Chapter Farmer at the chapter's 50th anniversary banquet.

Survivors include his three sons, Robert and his wife, Nancy Carlson of Plattsmouth, Neb., Ronald and his wife, Evon Carlson of Red Oak, Iowa, and Dennis and his wife, Connie Carlson of Elkhorn, Neb.; his two daughters, Nancy and her husband, Lowell Knudson of Nixa, Mo., and Deborah and her husband, Forrest Johnston of Hornick, Iowa; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a sister, Florence Brown of Eden Prairie, Minn.; a very special friend, Helen Marshall of South Sioux City; a very special person, Judy Carlson of Honey Creek, Iowa; as well as many nieces, nephews and other friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred; his parents; three brothers, Arnold, Richard and Harold Carlson; and two sisters, Lillie Pearson and June Bergren.

Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Tim Carlson, Brian Carlson, Scott Knudson, Mike Knudson, Dustin Johnston and Brett Johnston.

John Schultz will serve as organist providing organ accompaniment for the congregational hymn, "How Great Thou Art," and an organ solo, "Just a Closer Walk with Thee."

Memorials may be directed to the Reno Smith Chapter of the Future Farmers of America.
