Soldier, Iowa—Verne Clifford Ulven, 85, of Whiting, Iowa, formerly of Soldier, died Monday, Aug. 26, 2002, at Pleasant View Care Centre in Whiting.

Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Soldier Lutheran Church, with the Rev Jack Torgerson officiating. Burial will be in Soldier Lutheran South Church Cemetery, with military rites conducted by Soldier American Legion Post 462. There will be no visitation. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel in Sioux City.

Verne was born Jan. 18, 1917, to Olaf and Edith (Braden) Ulven, in Soldier. He was baptized and confirmed in the Soldier Lutheran Church. He graduated from Soldier High School in 1935.
He married Leona Manitz on Feb. 1, 1942, in Round Lake, Minn. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a farmer, school custodian, county bridge crew employee and manager of the Soldier Lumberyard.

He was a member of Soldier American Legion and Soldier Senior Center. He enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He also enjoyed reading, fishing, gardening, walking and dancing.

Survivors include Janet Foss of Soldier, Carol and Roger Gray of Webster City, Iowa, Lon Ulven and special friend, Jolene Reynolds, of Onawa, Iowa, Jon Ulven of Omaha, Joy and Rick Ehlers of Audubon, Iowa, and Kirk Ulven and special friend, Danielle Pierce, of Beresford, S.D.; 13 grandchildren, Robin and Brian Johnson, Dave and Shelly Foss, Dan and Diane Foss, Jeff and Kim Gray, Trisha Thelander, Christopher and Angela Ulven, Tracy and Mitch VanBeek, Darcy, Jake and Kassi Ehlers, Ashley Ulven and Katie and Nick Ulven; 14 great-grandchildren, Andy and Jordan Johnson, Kayla and Caden Ulven, Alexander and Zachary VanBeek, J.J., Kelsey and Kali Gray, Dustin and Levi Thelander, Matthew Kolker and Dani and Gavin Foss; two sisters, Mildred Britton of Jefferson, Iowa, and Doris Stoffregon of Lake View, Iowa; sister-in-law, Velma Ulven, Eulalia Manitz and Pearl and Jerry Christoffer, and brothers-in-law and their wives, Bill and Doris Manitz and Jack and Doris Manitz.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Leona; his parents; brothers, Earl, Bennett and Don; and a sister, Lydia.
