ONAWA, Iowa -- Virgil T. Sorenson, 84, of Onawa died Monday, July 22, 2002, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at First Christian Church in Onawa. Burial will be in Onawa Cemetery, with military rites conducted by Veterans of Foreign Wars Monona County Post 2694. There will be no visitation. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service in Onawa.

Virgil was born Sept. 15, 1917, in Woonsocket, S.D., the son of James and Helen (Sorenson) Sorenson. He attended school in Woonsocket and at a young age, moved to Moorhead, Iowa. He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II, in Algeria-French Morocco, Tunisia and Central Europe campaigns. He was a prisoner of war in Potsdam, Germany.

After his discharge, he moved to Onawa, where he worked for Yost Tire Shop for 20 years. He bought the business in 1966 and owned and operated Sorenson Tire Store until his retirement in 1982.

He was a member of First Christian Church, American Legion David McNeil Post 129 and the Onawa Country Club. He enjoyed woodworking.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Jane; two sons and their wives, Steve and Debby of Omaha, and Les and Kay of Onawa; two grandsons, Josh and Matt of Onawa; and three brothers, Harley and his wife, Bessie of Onawa, Everett and his wife, Dorothy of Onawa, and Clarence of Tennessee.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Chris; a sister, Mary Liabold; and two infant sisters.
