ONAWA, Iowa -Ernest "Roy" Stevens, 84, of Onawa died Tuesday, May 29, 2001, at Burgess Health Center in Onawa.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Evangelical Free Church in Onawa, with the Rev. David Montecuollo officiating. Burial will be in Harrison Cemetery, Whiting, Iowa, with military rites conducted by American Legion Emery Johnson Post 481 of Whiting. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at Rush Family Chapel in Onawa.

Mr. Stevens was born Oct. 5, 1916, in Sloan, Iowa, the son of John and Lily (Summer) Stevens. He was raised in the Sloan area and graduated from Sloan High School in 1936.

He married Evelyn McCoy on June 15, 1936, in Sioux City. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1943 to 1945. He was a longtime farmer in the Whiting community. His wife died June 21, 1999, in Sioux City.

He was affiliated with Evangelical Free Church. He was a member of American Legion Emery Johnson Post 481 and Whiting Outdoor Club. He enjoyed fishing, hunting camping and raising coon hounds.

Survivors include two sons and their wives, Gerry and Linda of Cabot, Ark., and Tom and Carol of North Sioux City; a daughter, Kathy Miller of Onawa; 11 grandchildren, Teri, Ron, Jason, Jamie and Scott Stevens, Tina Buster, Sandra Byers and Bill, Carl, Tommy and Margie Miller; 13 great-grandchildren; and a brother and his wife, Jack and Nadine of Valley, Neb.

He was preceded in death by a great-grandson.

Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Tommy and Carl Miller, Jamie, Jason, Ron and Scott Stevens.
