MAPLETON, Iowa -- Scott J. Green, 76, of Omaha, Neb., formerly of Mapleton, died Wednesday, April 9, 2003, at Hospice House in Omaha following a lengthy battle with cancer.

A memorial Mass will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church in Omaha, with the Rev. Don Shane officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. There will be a rosary at 11 a.m. Wednesday led by the Rev. Shane at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton, with visitation also one hour prior to the rosary. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Mapleton, with military rites conducted by American Legion Loren Hollister Post 496 of Mapleton.

Scott J. Green was born Oct. 20, 1926, in Oto, Iowa, the son of Scott and Ora (Lucas) Green. He was raised in Oto and graduated from Oto High School in 1944. He served his country in the Philippine Islands with the U.S. Army during World War II.

On Jan. 18, 1945, Scott was united in marriage to Berneice Hupke in Sioux City. Five children were born to this union. The couple lived a short time near Brooten, Minn., before making their home in Mapleton. While living in Mapleton, Scott had his own contracting business. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, a volunteer on the Mapleton Fire Department and a member of American Legion Loren Hollister Post 496, where he served as Post Commander and Adjutant.

In November 1968, the couple moved to Omaha, where Scott worked for several lumber companies, retiring from Millard Lumber in October 1989. He was a member of Millard Legion Post 374 and St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church.

Survivors include Berneice, his wife of 58 years; two daughters, Jeanette Anderson and her husband, Roger of Omaha, and Beverly Koeppen and her husband, Larry of Gladstone, Mo.; two sons, Leslie and his wife, Jean of Elkhorn, Neb., and Louis of Omaha; grandchildren, Mark Anderson, Ryan Green, Tara (Anderson) Compton, Shawnie (Koeppen) Fischer, Heather (Koeppen) Hulber, Jenelle (Green) Rock, Anthony Green, Justin Koeppen, Joel Green and Scott O. Green; stepgrandchildren, Chris and Kevin Anderson; a great-granddaughter, Cecilia Rock; great-stepgrandchildren, Christopher and Lindsey Anderson; a brother, Norman and his wife, Doris of Sioux Falls, S.D.; and many nieces, nephews and cherished friends.

In addition to his parents, Scott was preceded in death by a son, Francis; a brother, Gale; and two sisters, Eva Muckey and Ione Miller.
