Loretta Christine Schleis was born Oct. 21, 1915, in Sioux Valley, Minn., the daughter of Hans and Anna (Hadenfeld) Hennings. After the death of her father in 1926, the family moved to Denison, Iowa. She later graduated from Denison High School. She taught rural school in Crawford and Monona County.

On April 13, 1941, she was united in marriage to Lawrence "White" Schleis in Denison. The couple moved to Charter Oak, Iowa, in 1948, to Boyer, Iowa, in 1953, and in 1962, the family moved to a farm near Mapleton. "White" died Aug. 1, 1993.

She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and St. Mary's Guild. She was an avid bowler and loved to cook, garden, read, do crossword puzzles and was a fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes. Living on the farm was the life she enjoyed and her best times were those she shared with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Those left to cherish her memory include a daughter and her husband, Sharon and Jerry Tierney of Mapleton; a son and his wife, Tom and Judy Schleis of Fremont, Neb.; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; a brother, Andrew Hennings of Fort Myers, Fla.; two sisters-in-law, Esther Hennings of Florida and Marian Hennings of Council Bluffs, Iowa; and several other relatives, neighbors and good friends.

Along with her husband, she was also preceded in death by her parents; a grandson, Tony Tierney; a great-grandson, Tyler Cook; and three brothers, LeRoy, Ralph and Leonard.
