MAPLETON, Iowa -- Duane Robert "Bob" Fouts, 61, of Bellflower, Calif., formerly of Mapleton, died Sunday, July 22, 2007 in Bellflower.

A memorial service for his West Coast friends was held at 10 a.m., July 28 at Seal Beach. Graveside services will be 11 a.m., Aug. 31 at Little Sioux Township Cemetery, Smithland, Iowa with the Rev. Karen Handke officiating. Willman Funeral Home, Rodney, Iowa in n charge of local arrangements.

Duane was born Dec. 18, 1945 in Onawa, the second son of William J. and Esther (Kimnach) Fouts. He was the third child of four children. He attended school at Maple Valley Community School, Mapleton, graduating in 1964 as salutatorian of his class. He was active in baseball, football and basketball as well as school plays. He attended Iowa State University in Ames, where he was recruited to play baseball; graduating in 1968. He later received his master's degree from the University of Iowa in Iowa City.

After teaching and coaching at Westwood Community Schools in Sloan, Iowa for one year from 1969-70, Bob entered the U.S. Army and spent most of his service time in Fort Polk, La. Upon leaving military service, he taught and coached at several Iowa high schools during the 1970s, including Harris Lake Park, Cedar Rapids Washington and Council Bluffs Lewis Central. He was head coach of women's basketball at all three schools, taking Cedar Rapids Washington to the Iowa State Women's tournament twice, winning third place once.

Upon leaving education, Bob traveled to Las Vegas, Nev., to pursue business interest, ultimately settling in the Los Angeles, Calif. area.

He is survived by one sister Carol LeFebvre; one brother Barry Fouts and 12 nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.
