SOLDIER, Iowa -- Rodney "R.J." Johnson, 56, of Soldier, died unexpectedly Monday, July 16, 2007, at Burgess Health Center in Onawa, Iowa, after being stricken at home.

SOLDIER, Iowa -- Rodney "R.J." Johnson, 56, of Soldier, died unexpectedly Monday, July 16, 2007, at Burgess Health Center in Onawa, Iowa, after being stricken at home.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ute, Iowa, with the Rev. Edward Brandt officiating. Burial will be in St. Clair Cemetery at Ute. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the church. Armstrong Funeral Home of Ute is in charge of the arrangements.

Rodney Dennis Johnson was born Aug. 30, 1950, at home south of Ute. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ute. He attended school and graduated from Charter Oak-Ute High School with the class of 1968. Rodney furthered his education by attending Northwest Missouri State College in Maryville, Mo., graduating in 1973. He returned home to farm and take on various other kinds of jobs. Some of these included raising hogs, working for Johnson-Leitz Construction and of late, with his brother, Roger.

Rodney really enjoyed reading any kind of book, watching and playing sports and spending time with family and friends. He played slow pitch softball for the Ute Navahos and other softball teams. He was a man who would help anyone - "always willing to lend a helping hand."

He married Jane Hanks Oct. 7, 1989, at the Town and Country in Ute.

Survivors include his wife, Jane; his mother, Ruby Johnson of Ute; a brother, Roger Johnson, also of Ute; two nieces and their husbands, Lisa and Randy Steffen of Charter Oak, Iowa and Reagan and Ben Barry of Des Moines; four nephews, Eric Johnson and Mark Parker of Dallas, Texas, Ryan King and his wife, Kerri of Mondamin, Iowa, Scott Johnson and his wife, Mia of San Bernadino, Calif. and Kyle King and his wife, Erin of Wentzville, Mo.; three great nieces; eight great nephews; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, James and Mary Hanks of Missouri Valley, Iowa; and a sister-in-law, Susan Baak and her husband, Dale of Holstein, Iowa; along with other relatives and many, many good friends.

Rodney was preceded in death by his grandparents; his father, Elvin Johnson; and a brother, Kevin Johnson.
