MAPLETON, Iowa -- Melvin Paul Kettler, 83, of Mapleton died Sunday, July 8, 2007, at Immanuel Select Specialty Hospital in Omaha, Neb.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mapleton, with the Rev. Raymond Wieling officiating. There will be a flag presentation by the American Legion Loren Hollister Post 496. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service Thursday, with a Knights of Columbus rosary at 10:30 a.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton.

Melvin Kettler, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Kettler, was born Jan. 26, 1924, in Sioux City. He moved to Homer, Neb. with his parents, then to Mapleton. He attended Mapleton schools and graduated in 1941. He served in World War II, stationed in Germany under General Patton from 1943 to 1946. Upon returning to Mapleton, he and his father ran Kettler Hardware until he retired.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He loved to travel, touring Canada, Alaska, China, Italy, Greece and Spain among others. He enjoyed his friends at the jewelry store, bank and the barber shop in Mapleton.

Left to cherish his memory are his sister and her husband, Joan and Gordon Cornwall of Estherville, Iowa; their three children and their spouses, Susan (Cornwall) and Clay Fletcher and their three children of Spencer, Iowa, Michael and Kathy Cornwall and their two children of Estherville, Iowa, and Dr. Randy and Stacie Cornwall and their three children of Spirit Lake, Iowa; a niece, Barbara Kettler delAmos (daughter of his late brother Francis) of San Antonio, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Francis who was killed in the Battle of the Bulge.

He will be greatly missed by all.
