Mapleton, Iowa--Doris E. Hayes, 85, of Mapleton died Tuesday, September 4, 2007, at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton.

Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Peter’s United Church of Christ in Mapleton, with Pastors Bob Fritzmeier and Deborah Stowers officiating. Burial will be in St. Clair Cemetery at Ute, Iowa. Visitation will be one hour prior to service Saturday at the church. 1Armstrong Funeral Home of Mapleton is in charge of the arrangements.

Doris Ella Hayes was born October 10, 1921 on the family farm in Soldier Township, Monona Country, Iowa, the daughter of Clarence and Idella (O’Connor) Fritz. She attended school between Castana and Mapleton right off of Leach Hollow Road.

On December 17, 1941, she married Joe Hayes at Denison, Iowa. Doris and Joe lived in Ute until 1945, when they moved to Mapleton. Two daughters were born to the union, Judy and Vickie. Joe died November 1, 1989.

She was a member of St. Peter’s United Church of Christ in Mapleton, the American Legion Auxiliary and volunteered at Maple Heights Nursing Home for a number of years. Doris hobbies were reading, playing cards and bingo, but the focus of her life was on the loving care of her family and home.

Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Judy and Horst Zittlau of Sergeant Bluff; grandchildren, Ramona Harris and her husband, Ben of Florence, Ariz., Brian Zittlau and his wife, Kathy of Mesa, Ariz., Kirk Zittlau and his wife, Shelly of Sioux Falls, S.D., William Gilmore of Detroit, Mich., Jenny Gilmore, also of Detroit, and Eric Smith of Michigan; six great-grandchildren, Dylan Perkins, Rachel and Carrie Harris, and Tanner, Taylor and Jack Zittlau; a brother-in-law, Ernest Wellner of Killeen, Texas; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Dorothy Fritz of Moore, Mont., and many nieces and nephews.

Along with her husband, Doris was preceded in death by a daughter, Vickie Gilmore; her parents; Clarence and Idella Fritz; three sisters, Viola Lee, Margaret Klein and Dorothy Jane Wellner; and two brothers, Alvin and Donald Fritz.

Honorary pallbearers will be Brian and Kirk Zittlau, Donald Bridgeman, Donald Klein, and Bruce, Richard, Byron and Paul Fritz.

Memorials may be directed to St. Peter’s United Church of Christ and Hospice of Siouxland.
