Susan Elizabeth HumphreysSusan Elizabeth Humphreys was born in St. Louis, Mo, January 20th 1854. She was married to Charles Cox, at Castana, on April 24th, 1870 by F.A. Oldis. To this union, eight children were born. John Cox, Mrs. Laura Clemmer, Wm. Cox, Geo Cox, Mrs. Rose Gray, Frank H, H. S. and Otis Cox, all residing in Omaha, Nebr., but Mrs. Rose Gray, of Blencoe, Iowa, and Frank Cox, of Castana, Iowa. On November 4th, 1888, her husband passed away at the age of 49 years and 1 month.
On March 8, 1893 she was married to G.H. Porter, two children blessed this union, Mrs. Effie Peters, Pemline, Wis. and Mrs. Ruby Neal, Penokee, Kans. Mrs. S.E. Porter had been making her home with her daughter, Mrs. Taylor Gray, south of Blencoe, since November and had been sick with the Flu and inflamatory rheumatism since the first of January. She had gotten better and had gone to Castana, to visit her son and stepsister and was taken down again and died at that place at 11:50 o’clock March 16, 1920, aged 66 years, 1 month and 26 days. She had been a resident of Monona Country since childhood. Funeral services were conducted by Rev Jansen of the Congregational church at 2 o’clock Thursday at Castana. Murial was made by the side of her husband and father in the Castana cemetery.
Mrs. Porter was always a hard working and industrious women, a thoughtful and loving mother and will be missed by all who knew her. The children have the sympathy of all in this their great sorrow.
