“Raymond Ernest Olson was born October 28, 1918, in Soldier, Iowa to parents Olius and Bertha (Evenson) Olson. He attended country school in Soldier and Dunlap and attended Dunlap High School. Raymond worked for several area farmers then for the railroad.

In May of 1946 he married Georgia Jones. The couple farmed with Hap Heistand before moving to Battle Creek in 1958 to continue farming. They moved to Kiron in 1962 and retired from farming in 1979 and moved to Dow City. He took care of the Dow City cemetery for a number of years. When Georgia became ill, Raymond was very devoted to taking care of her until her death on July 3, 1988. Raymond moved to the Reed House in Denison in June of 2001 and then to Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison in May of 2003.

Raymond was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Dunlap and the Farm Bureau. He was an Atlanta Braves fan and enjoyed watching golf on the television. Raymond leaned how to golf after Georgia’s death.

Raymond died Monday, April 19, 2004 at Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison at the age of 85 years, five months, and 22 days.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife; his son, Bob Olson in 2002; his grandson, Jeffrey Olson; two sisters, Ethel Hartwig and Edith Heistand and three brothers, Virgil, Russell and Lyle Olson.

He is survived by his sons, Ralph Olson and his wife Ann of Denison, Kenneth Olson and his wife Lisa of Creston; daughter-in-law, Gail Olson of Omaha, Neb.; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sister, Irene Pedersen of Denison and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at St. John Lutheran Church in Dunlap Thursday morning, April 22, 2004 at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor Carla Ingebretsen officiating. Musician was Lauri Boysen. Congregational hymns were “How Great Thou Art” and “Amazing Grace.” Vocalist was Katie Schaben who sang “On Eagles Wings.”

Interment was made at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Dunlap. Pallbearers were Allen Hartwig, Gary Hartwig, Ronnie Hartwig, Tom Heistand, Jack Keuter, Larry Pedersen. Fouts Funeral Home in Dunlap was in charge of arrangements.
